Hemyock, Devon

The biggest village on the Blackdown Hills (AONB); it’s a very sociable community, with a primary school, medical centre, garage, hairdressers, and 2 shops – one with a post office. St. Mary’s Church has a list of ‘dog-whippers’ on the wall (see note); have a look and then go to The Catherine Wheel, sit in the beer garden and sip a pint of local ale, or find a cosy nook inside and tuck into such delights as Buttered Leek and Exmoor Blue tart with new potatoes and wild garlic pesto, or Balinese seafood curry. Pick up one of the little footpaths and go and explore the beautiful countryside.
And here's a curious little by note: Between the 16th and 19th centuries, dog-whippers were employed by the church to keep unruly dogs away from church grounds during services!
