The Lanes, Brighton, East Sussex

If you decide to head over to Brighton for a day out when you’re on your large group holiday in East Sussex, make time to explore The Lanes. This part of town, between North Laine and the seafront, is well known for its quirkiness and the eclectic mix of shops and places to eat; parts of it date back to the 16th century when Brighton was just a small fishing town.

Brick paved alleyways (they call them ‘twittens’ in this neck of the woods) lined with older buildings wind round and about, opening onto unexpected squares where you might see modern redevelopment, but it all works and the air is upbeat and brisk. There are big name stores and eateries, but there are also plenty of independent boutiques and cafes, and lots of vintage; you’ll see huge murals, a green wall, buskers and especially in the summer, live entertainment. It’s the kind of place where you want to hang around, to take your time browsing the shops or to sit and watch the goings on.
