For a brilliant family day out, climb on board an old-fashioned steam train with the West Somerset Railway and enjoy a scenic ride to the coast. Get off Blue Anchor or Minehead to play on the sands, browse the artists’ quarter and stroll along the harbour at Watchet.
In Taunton you can browse the shops, or maybe catch a cricket match at the Somerset County Ground; play adventure golf or do the high ropes course at Vivary Golf & Adventure Centre. Hire a boat at Maunsel Lock and spend a day on the waters of the Bridgwater to Taunton Canal, find out how traditional Somerset cider is made at Sheppy’s Cider, amble around the enchanting gardens at Hestercombe House, take the kids to Doniford Farm Park or Tropiquaira Wildlife Park. Just over an hour away are the beaches of the Jurassic Coast where Lyme Regis is a must with its Marine Aquarium and Dinosaurland Fossil Museum.
