Allerford, Somerset

When you're exploring Exmoor National Park on your large group holidays in Somerset, go to Allerford, because it's so pretty and so peaceful - one of those quintessential Exmoor villages that you just have to see. Just a few miles from Porlock, Allerford is well known for its 15th century packhorse bridge, the scene of many a selfie, and for its gorgeous cottages, some thatched, some with roses scrambling happily up the walls. There's a village shop with a post office and tea gardens, and a working forge that's owned by the National Trust; the Victorian schoolroom  is now home to the West Somerset Rural Life Museum and has some interesting displays.

Allerford is the starting point for some excellent walks - wander down the lane to Bossington, climb up to Selworthy Beacon, or explore some of the spectacular woodlands on the Holnicote Estate
