Broadhembury, Honiton, Devon

If you’re planning a large group holiday in East Devon you should definitely factor in a visit to Broadhembury just a few miles from Honiton; it’s the kind of village you don’t see much these days, dating back to medieval times and largely unspoilt. The main street is lined with bumpy walled thatched cottages built in the 16th and 17th centuries, and in the square there’s a shop and tea room. You should go and see the church too; next to it is the oldest house in the village, thought to be a priest’s house originally, and later used as a Poor House, a Reading Room and a School Room. Opposite it is a charming Manor House with a gorgeous garden that is occasionally opened to the public. It's one of those places where you can leisurely wander around, looking about and imagining what it's like to live here - undoubtedly peaceful and far removed from the constant hubbub of city life.

Wander back down the lane to the Drewe Arms and have lunch inside by the wood-burner if it’s chilly, or outside in the pretty garden if the sun has come out to play.
