Castle Combe, Chippenham, Wiltshire

There’s no harm in spending a couple of hours pootling around this quintessentially English village that falls within the Cotswolds AONB; you’ll notice how the pace of life slows down and it’s all so utterly charming – honey coloured stone cottages typical of this area, a 13th century church, a couple of pubs and tea shops, and a low arched bridge over the Bybrook River. It’s the kind of place where you can quite happily find a seat and sit and watch the world go by for a while, especially on a warm day in spring. You might even recognise the village from films you’ve watched – Doctor Doolittle was filmed here in the 1960’s, and it’s also been the setting for Stardust and War Horse, as well as featuring in Downton Abbey in 2012.
Castle Combe has its own golf club and on the edge of the village you can put your driving skills to the test or go to one of the regular events held at Castle Combe Circuit. If you fancy lunch whilst you’re here try the Castle Inn or the Salutation Inn – both have very good reviews.
