Combe Florey, Somerset

Combe Florey is a small and peaceful Somerset village lying in a wooded valley about 6 miles from Taunton, just off the A358 - the road that leads to the Quantock Hills and on to Dunster and Minehead. There's no denying the charm of yesteryear that the village exudes, with quirky cottages made of the reddy-pink sandstone that's found in these parts. If you have a stroll around you'll notice some curious buildings in the village, including an Elizabethan gatehouse next to the church and a tower in the woods, which is a private residence. Combe Florey is well known for its literary connections - it's where Brideshead revisited author Evelyn Waugh made his country seat until he died in 1966; he lies buried in the churchyard with his wife; go and see his grave and then wander back down to the Farmers Arms for a pint of local cider and some very good tucker.
