Curry Rivel, Somerset

A large village near Langport on the south western edge of the Somerset Levels. Fill up with petrol at the garage, stock up with provisions at the shop, and have stone baked pizza at the Firehouse, then go for a stroll up the lane to the village green and admire the thatched cottages and the church of St. Andrew. From here there's a good walk of about 4 miles across the fields and up through the woods to the Burton Pynsent monument; the views from here are incredible, stretching out across the Levels for miles, and it's a smashing spot to stop for a breather. En route you go along a drove where you look down upon a nature reserve that's home to flocks of migratory birds; take the binoculars.
