Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Norton St Philip, near Bath, Somerset

Go and see the remains of this 14th century castle on the Wiltshire and Somerset border; it’s a tranquil place to be now but for 300 years it was home to the Hungerford family and boy, do they have some gruesome history! You can hear it all on the free audio tour.
See the rare medieval wall paintings and the family tombs in the chapel, the objects that were found in the Priest’s House, the tower where the Lady of the House was imprisoned in the 16th century, and if you dare, venture into the crypt to see the bizarre human shaped lead coffins.
Take a picnic and find an idyllic spot with views of the Frome Valley, visit the shop for a souvenir. There’s parking, loos and a vending machine and dogs are allowed on leads in the grounds only.
