Gloucester, Gloucestershire

A lively city with 2000 years of history stretching right back to Roman times. The historic architecture is an impressive backdrop to the vibrant city streets where there’s lots going on and plenty of attractions. Big name stores and independent shops stand side by side, and when it comes to places to eat there’s quite a choice from tea shops and wine bars to traditional pubs and up market restaurants. Don’t miss the splendiferous 11th century cathedral where you can see the tomb of Edward II, visit the Jet Age Museum or the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Military Museum, book a heritage tour, or hire a narrow boat and have a leisurely trip along the canal. Go down to Gloucester Docks where restored Victorian warehouses are home to museums, exhibitions and antiques centres, and to the charming Mariner’s Church. When you’re feeling peckish try Cote Brasserie, On Toast, The Tall Ships Pub or Hubble Bubble Coffee House; all are said to be very good.
