La Rochelle Aquarium, La Rochelle, Poitou-Charentes

Not just any old aquarium, La Rochellle Aquarium also happens to be a research, training and awareness centre, so you can imagine, can’t you? Over 800,000 visitors come here every year and take a 2 hour tour to discover things they would never have dreamt of about the sea. The Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, Mediterranean, and Atlantic are covered, with over 600 species including blacktip reef shark, northern sea nettle, orange clownfish, sea turtles, red-bellied piranha and big-belly seahorses.
There’s a tropical forest to explore, spaces for younger visitors, and a Gallery of Lights, a phenomenal showcase of how certain species use light to hunt, defend, escape and communicate. Expect hushed ‘wows’. There’s a café and restaurant at the Aquarium, and of course, a gift shop.
