Muchelney Abbey, Muchelney, Somerset

King Henry VIII has a lot to answer for. Thanks to him this once glorious abbey now lies in ruins, though you can still see the foundations clearly and the 16th century Abbots' House remains intact. Parts of the decorative cloister walk are still visible and there's a monks' lavatory, which is thatched and the only one of its kind in Britain. It's worth a visit if you like history and architecture, and just to experience the lovely setting and the hallowed tranquillity. There's an interactive trail around the abbey for families and the kids can spot the stone carvings and get dressed up in monks robes. Take a picnic, have a leisurely lunch; just to be here is all you need.
