Perrygrove Railway, nr Coleford, Gloucestershire

Who likes the idea of a lesiurely ride on a lovely old-fashioned steam train through the Forest of Dean? Doesn't that sound nice? Get yourselves down to the Perrygrove Railway station at Coleford, climb on board and sit back as you pootle through the loveliest countryside; ah, that's the life! Get off at one of the little stations and wander the paths into the ancient woodland, build a den, have a picnic at Foxy Hollow or if it's wet take the little ones to the indoor play area.

Grab a treasure hunt map for the kids, help them solve all the clues, then return to the indoor village to unlock your treasure box and see what you've won. Whilst youre there have a game of hide and seek - it's rather fun because you see, the indoor village has five houses all connected by secret passages. You can imagine!

There's a Treetop Adventure too, a kind of mini village of treehouses and ladders, and a wibblywobbly suspension bridge. If you need something to calm your nerves after that, go and have a cake and a cup of tea in the cafe. Perrygrove Railway is only a short track, three quarters of a mile long with four stations and a trip takes little more than 30 minutes, but don’t let that put you off because it’s charming, and when Father Christmas visits or they're doing a Teddy Bear's Picnic it’s such a wonderful place to be.
