Puy du Fou Historical Theme Park, Les Epesses, Vendée

Puy de Fou Historical Theme Park certainly takes some beating, which is exactly why it’s the second most popular theme park in France after Disneyland Paris, attracting over 2 million visitors a year. So, what’s it all about exactly? There are no rides, and no touristy tat, instead the focus is on shows. But to call them shows doesn’t do them justice at all; these are lavish extravaganzas, spectacular displays that meld circus, stunts and history like you’ve never seen before, and the evening shows on the lake will leave you lost for words. Think Viking battleships, Roman Gladiators, King Arthur, that sort of thing, and imagine it all with real animals – lions and tigers, and falconry displays with over 200 birds in the sky. It’s incredible! There are also settlements you can immerse yourself in, like a Viking village, a medieval town and an 18th century farm.
Puy du Fou Historical Theme Park covers 50 hectares of forest and gardens so there’s plenty of places where you can have a quiet moment away from the crowds if you want to.
Useful stuff? They do pushchair hire, there are food stalls and restaurants in the park, you can’t take dogs in but they do have boarding kennels. This is an amazing day out, something you’ll never, ever forget – history is waiting for you, as their slogan goes.
