Roman Amphitheatre, Saintes, France

Just outside the historic centre of Saintes, this is one of the best conserved Roman amphitheatres in Europe, built under Tiberius and completed under Claudius in 40AD. It once held 15,000 spectators at some quite gruesome events but nowadays stages several more refined musical concerts and artistic performances each year. Take a guided tour because it’s interesting and it’s not very often you get the chance to see this sort of thing; the atmosphere is peaceful and unique.

Opening times vary throughout the year  68.2 miles from Chateau La Chutelière
