Selborne, Alton, Hampshire
Mention Selborne and most people will automatically think of Gilbert White, the 18th century writer whose famous book The Natural History of Selborne has never gone out of print since it was first published in 1789. You can visit his house, The Wakes, more commonly known as Gilbert White’s House and follow the zig-zag path he created up the Selborne Hanger for staggering views of the South Downs.
Selborne is an attractive Hampshire village, with lots of red brick buildings and tall chimneys typical of this neck of the woods. There’s a pottery and a very good pub, The Selborne Arms where a couple of hours spent over lunch or dinner would be considered a couple of hours very well spent.
