Somerset Levels, Somerset

The Somerset Levels and Moors are a uniquely beautiful landscape, full of centuries old tracks and waterways which helped the people who lived and worked there to farm the area. It’s a land of legend and mystery, believed by some to be King Arthur’s Avalon, with viewpoints now and then rising out of the otherwise flat countryside – Burrow Mump and Glastonbury Tor. It’s a nature lovers paradise, with a huge lowland population of wading birds, and cranes successfully reintroduced into the area in recent years. You can watch amazing starling murmurations at Shapwick Heath, and if you’re lucky, you might see an otter, or hear a bittern booming out across the marshes. There are quaint villages with inns that make for a relaxing pub lunch. Try the Sheppey Inn at Godney, the Swan at Wedmore, or King Alfred at Burrowbridge.
