SS Great Britain, Bristol, Somerset

A visit to SS Great Britain makes a fantastic day out for families: Brunel’s maritime masterpiece stands in the very Bristol dockyard where it was built before finally being launched by Prince Albert in 1843; thousands of visitors flock here each year to see this famous ship that sits on its glass sea; go down to the dry dock below and you can see the iron hull from beneath the water flooded glass roof. The history of SS Great Britain is brought to life in the Dockyard Museum, with stories, paintings, photographs and interactive exhibits. On board you’re transported to its heyday by the evocative sights, sounds and smells; see the opulent dining saloon, the galley, stores and bakery, the crowded bunks. Back on deck you can even climb the rigging (ticket only).

Whilst you’re here you can delve into maritime history at the Brunel Institute, and then go and have a light meal or snack in the Dockyard Café; try the ‘baked on board’ cakes, made to Victorian inspired recipes.

Open daily from 10.00 am, except 24th and 25th December, and the second Monday in January
