The Bank, Taunton, Somerset

Usually when you’re looking for somewhere to eat in a town it pays to venture away from the centre and down the quiet side streets; that way you’re more likely to stumble across a gem, the kind of place you want to tell all your mates about and come back to again and again.
Well, that’s certainly the case with The Bank; it’s only a couple of minute’s stroll from the centre of Taunton and it certainly ticks all the boxes when it comes to good places to eat. It’s a lovely old building with a cosy bar downstairs – wooden floors, ceiling timbers, exposed old bricks and that; upstairs is a restaurant with a more contemporary feel. When it’s warm in the summer they open the doors to the rooftop terrace and you can dine out there if you like; otherwise it’s a good spot for a pre-dinner cocktail.
The menu is modern British dishes with international flavours and it’s all freshly prepared and cooked to order with ingredients being locally sourced where possible. Of an evening start with something like Pork & Rabbit Scotch Egg or Crispy Quails Eggs, Rocket, Croutons and Fig Relish. Move on to temptations such as Roasted Mediterranean Vegetable Strudel with Tuscan Potatoes, Cherry Tomato & Red Onion Compote, or Belly Pork, Parmentier Potatoes, Beetroot, Mangetout, and Lemon Chimichurri.
They serve a fantastic range of drinks at the Bank, from ciders and beers to wines, spirits and cocktails; staff are impressively attentive and they look after you very well indeed.
