The Church in the Field, Low Ham, Somerset

History, romance and tranquillity in a glorious setting at Low Ham on the Somerset Levels. A Grade 1 listed church that was once a private chapel to the local manor house stands in a wide terraced field that gently climbs to meet the sky; these terraces are the only evidence left of the big house that was demolished in the late 19th century.
Built of the blue lias stone favoured in this part of Somerset, the Church in the Field is surprisingly light and airy inside, having recently undergone extensive repairs; of note are the ornately decorative chancel screen and the pulpit, and there are some gorgeous stained glass windows and carved stone effigies. It won’t take you long to have a good look around, but do; it’s lovely.
