The Pig at Combe, near Honiton, Devon

In the Otter Valley this rambling Elizabethan manor stands in lush Devon countryside in the village of Gittisham, just off the A30, not far from Honiton. They’ve really mixed it up and turned it on its head here, with not a whiff of manor house stuffiness; instead it’s all gorgeous interiors, relaxed dining rooms, cosy sitting rooms and some interesting and quirky pieces dotted about.

In the garden there’s a partly-restored folly with a wood fired oven; rustic chic at its best. You can book it for 22 guests for a wonderful indoor/outdoor dining experience with family style sharing dishes. For smaller parties of up to 14, opt for the Georgian Kitchen, with its working range and huge dresser, or try wine tasting at the Sommelier’s Table in The Cellar.

They have a huge kitchen garden here and they have a mission that whatever can’t be grown there must be sourced within a 25 miles radius, keeping it local, keeping it real. The menu has far too many temptations to list, but how does Walled Garden Salad or Garden Spinach & Nettle Soup sound – all freshly picked of course? The mains, oh the mains; Buckhouse Lamb Loin with Walking Onions, Asparagus & Roasted Beetroot, Lyme Bay Hake Fillet with Teign Mussels, Shore Veg, Radishes & White Wine Sauce, Devonshire Seared Duck Breast with Garden Herb Turnips & Spring Cabbage …..
