The Priest's House, Muchelney, Somerset

The National Trust own this charming late medieval thatched house in the village of Muchelney near Langport. It dates back to 1308 and was built for the parish priest of the church of St Peter & Paul, across the road; go and visit that too - the painted ceiling, with its topless angels is incredible. The Priest's House is tenanted so you ring the bell and wait for the residents to greet you and show you around. It won't take long but it's quite something with the Gothic doorway, big tracery windows and a huge 15th century stone fireplace. The little garden is also lovely, with cottage flowers and in the summer, bees lazily buzzing among the lavender.

Open 2-5 pm Mar-Sept - Sundays and Mondays only - well worth checking before you venture out.
