Underground Church, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, France

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is renowned as one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France; the underground church of Saint Jean that stand here was carved from subterranean rock in the 12th century to house religious artefacts. Quite some feat as the church is breath taking and very atmospheric, with viewing points of the main room. There’s a Roman reliquary discovered during the first Crusade, and a necropolis containing over 80 stone tombs.

Open all year 9.30-12.30 and 2.00-6.00, except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.  95.6 miles from Chateau La Chutelière
