Wedmore, Somerset
A bustling village on the Somerset Levels on raised ground between the Rivers Axe and Brue, hence its name the Isle of Wedmore. It’s a very attractive village, with old cottages around the square that dates back to Saxon times, and some rather fine Georgian houses. It might be hard to imagine going shopping in a village but you can here; there are several independent boutiques and gift shops, a very good delicatessen with a cafe, florists, fishmongers and a farm shop. There are even beauty salons and hairdressers, and if you fancy lunch there’s a choice of three pubs and at least two restaurants. The village has a very lively community with regular events – farmers/craft markets, Tower Tours of the church, the annual bad art show with the top award of the Turnip prize, and every July everyone comes out for the Street Fair. Worth a browse and lunch at The Swan, The George, the New Inn, or Nanny Ida’s.
