Wells Cathedral stands on the picturesque green in the middle of Wells just as it has since the 12th century; it’s easy to see why this glorious edifice attracts so many visitors each year because there is so much to marvel at and it's just such a mellow place to be. Before you go in pause and look up at the intricately carved statues on the West Front, of biblical scenes, kings and bishops, orders of angels, and right at the top, of the twelve apostles and Christ Himself. Inside you can see the unique scissor arches that support the central tower, climb the age worn steps to the octagonal Chapter House where bishops met in times gone by, and in the North transept, watch the joustling knights appear as the iconic Wells Clock strikes every quarter of an hour.
There are regular guided tours, a gift shop, and along the tranquil cloisters, a café where you can pause for tea and cake and to reflect upon your visit. Afterwards go and see the cobbled Vicar's Close just around the corner; built to house the men of the choir in the 14th century, it has the claim to fame of being the oldest continually inhabited street in Europe - but not just that, it's such a lovely sight so you should take a look.
