Weymouth, Dorset
On the Dorset coastline, Weymouth certainly isn’t short on traditional seaside ambience, you know, a long seafront, deckchairs set out on golden sands, Punch & Judy, donkey rides, a busy harbourside, and plenty of family attractions. All that’s missing are the ‘Kiss me Quick’ hats and the old men with rolled up trouser legs and knotted hankies on their heads!
Joking aside, Weymouth makes for a good day out if you’re staying nearby on your holidays in the UK, so if the sun is shining make the most of it, take a picnic to have on the beach, tuck into fish and chips, or book a table at one of the many eateries in town – carnivores will like The Dorset Burger Company and The Handmade Pie & Ale House, pescatarians will like Crustacean, and vegetarians and vegans should try Stanleys.
So, what to do, apart from the obvious play on the beach and in the sea? Well, there are two main shopping streets for those who can’t resist a bit of retail therapy, but if you prefer peace and quiet you should head for the RSPB reserve at Radipole Lake or Bennetts Water Gardens; go up in the Jurassic Skyline observation tower and you’ll get a birds eye view of this part of the World Heritage Site Jurassic Coast, though if you don’t have a head for heights it might not be such a good idea. Worth a visit though are the historic underground passages at Nothe Fort, and Sandworld for its incredible sand sculptures. What the kids will love is Weymouth Sea Life and Adventure Park.
