Wildwood Escot, Ottery St Mary, Devon

What they're all about at Wildwood Escot is preserving British wildlife - and at the same time, being a brilliant family attraction that offers a day out that's not just exciting, but also educational. Well, they got that right, this is great fun! For starters there are the animals; follow the winding paths through the woodlands and look out for lynx, wild boar, wildcat, red squirrels and otters. There are talks and feeds every day so if it appeals, go along and find out more. Otherwise head off to the woodland playgrounds where the kids can make whoopee on a pirate ship, a tree house, or in the bug jungle gym. Climb up into the Giant's Chair for phenomenal views of the Devon countryside. grab the rope swing and make like Tarzan! Find your way to the middle of the beech maze (and back again!), do the seasonal nature trail, and if you're brave enough, have a whizz on the drop slide.

Another thing they have here, which you don't see every day, is a Saxon Village where you can visit the working forge, meet the Saxons and even join in with the hands-on activities. If the weather's not the best and the little ones get a bit fractious take them to the indoor play barn, and if you need warming up go to the Coach House Restaurant for hot chocolate. Of course, it would be wrong not to pop in the gift shop for a little memento of your day out...
