York Inn, Churchinford, Somerset

The York Inn is possibly a rare find these days - a proper country pub with no fuss and no frills; the atmosphere is good, the beer is good and the hearty homemade food is good – so it’s all good and there’s every reason to give it a try.

The setting is a traditional Somerset village in the Blackdown Hills, halfway between Taunton and Honiton. There’s a beer garden outside, and inside it’s all thick stone walls, a wood-burner for the colder days, and a lovely cosy atmosphere. If you’re staying nearby at a Sleeps12 large group holiday house, make the effort to come here for dinner, or earmark it for after a walk in the hills.

Food is all homemade, cooked to order, with locally sourced produce a big feature. Even the fussiest fusspots should find something to suit them on the menu; there are all the pub classics, a choice of burgers, steaks from the grill, a very tempting selection of pies, and at lunchtimes, baguettes and Ploughmans’. They also have a regularly changing specials board offering delights such as Cod, spinach & king prawn mornay, and Slow roast brisket with horseradish mash, fresh vegetables and brisket gravy. Every Wednesday from 5:15 pm there’s a takeaway menu, Saturday mornings from 10:00 am you can tuck into a breakfast that will certainly set you up for the day, and Sundays, of course, it’s big fat roasts.
